What Should Baby Wear Outside at 10–13°C (50–55°F)?

Outside at 10–13°C (50–55°F): Cool — a mid layer plus a hat. Degree by degree, by age, and in wind, rain or a car seat.

Cool days sit between a sweater and a jacket: a warm sweater over a long-sleeve bodysuit, and a warm hat, with the jacket held back until below 10°C.

For a baby of 6–12 months on a still, dry day:

13°C (55°F): long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks, warm sweater and warm hat. Cool — a mid layer plus a hat. 12°C (54°F): long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, socks, warm sweater and warm hat. Cool — a mid layer plus a hat. 10–11°C (50–52°F): long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater and warm hat. Cool — a mid layer plus a hat.

Lined trousers come on below 13°C and wool socks below 12°C. Wind and rain make it feel colder than the number, and the app dresses for how it feels. In rain below 20°C a jacket goes on to keep the layers dry, even where it isn't needed for warmth.

Take the hat and outer layers off once you are inside, or in a warm car, bus or train.

Each piece comes on at its own temperature, a degree or two apart, so the outfit changes one piece at a time.

Drops socks Sunny (feels like 14°C (57°F)): Adds pants and light sweater. Drops warm pants and warm sweater In a carrier (your warmth counts on the body): Warm sweater becomes light sweater In a car seat (no coat under the straps): No change

Indoors, or in a warm car, bus or train, take the hat and outer layers off.

Check the neck — warm but not sweaty means just right.
