What Should a Toddler Wear? Outside, at Home and to Sleep

What a toddler of 1 to 3 years can wear: a touch lighter than a baby, outside, at home and to sleep, by temperature, from the Baby Layers app.

Toddlers run warm and move a lot, so the app dresses a 1–3 year old a touch lighter than a baby, outside, at home and for sleep.

Outside: 23°C and up: T-shirt, shorts and sun hat. 22°C: T-shirt, shorts, socks and sun hat. 20–21°C: T-shirt, shorts and socks. 19°C: T-shirt, pants and socks. 18°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants and socks. 14–17°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks and light sweater. 13°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks, light sweater and warm hat. 12°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks, warm sweater and warm hat. 11°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, socks, warm sweater and warm hat. 9–10°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater and warm hat. 5–8°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, jacket and warm hat. 1–4°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, jacket, warm hat and mittens. 0°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, winter jacket, warm hat and mittens. Under 0°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, winter jacket, warm hat and warm mittens.

At home: 23°C and up: T-shirt. 20–22°C: T-shirt and socks. 17–19°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants and socks. 14–16°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks and light sweater. Under 14°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks and warm sweater.

For sleep: 25°C and up: short-sleeve bodysuit. 23–24°C: short-sleeve bodysuit (0.5 TOG). 20–22°C: short-sleeve bodysuit (1.0 TOG). 17–19°C: long-sleeve bodysuit (2.5 TOG). Under 17°C: long-sleeve bodysuit and sleepsuit (2.5 TOG).

Toddlers run warm and move a lot, so a touch lighter is fine.

On warm days a toddler moves to a T-shirt and shorts a little sooner than a baby.

For sleep, the app dresses a toddler as if the room were a little warmer, so the lighter sack comes a degree earlier.

No hats or loose blankets for sleep. Check the neck — warm but not sweaty means just right.
