What Should a 6-Month-Old Wear? Outside, at Home and to Sleep

What a baby of 6 to 12 months can wear: outside in every weather, at home by room temperature, and to sleep with the right TOG, from the Baby Layers app.

From six months a baby holds heat much like you do, so the app dresses them about as you would dress yourself, plus a layer outside when they are sitting still in a pram.

Outside: 25°C and up: short-sleeve bodysuit and sun hat. 24°C: short-sleeve bodysuit, pants and sun hat. 23°C: short-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks and sun hat. 20–22°C: short-sleeve bodysuit, pants and socks. 19°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants and socks. 15–18°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks and light sweater. 14°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks, light sweater and warm hat. 13°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks, warm sweater and warm hat. 12°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, socks, warm sweater and warm hat. 10–11°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater and warm hat. 6–9°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, jacket and warm hat. 2–5°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, jacket, warm hat and mittens. 1°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, winter jacket, warm hat and mittens. Under 1°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks, warm sweater, winter jacket, warm hat and warm mittens.

At home: 24°C and up: short-sleeve bodysuit. 21–23°C: short-sleeve bodysuit and socks. 18–20°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants and socks. 15–17°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, pants, socks and light sweater. Under 15°C: long-sleeve bodysuit, warm pants, warm socks and warm sweater.

For sleep: 26°C and up: short-sleeve bodysuit. 24–25°C: short-sleeve bodysuit (0.5 TOG). 21–23°C: short-sleeve bodysuit (1.0 TOG). 18–20°C: long-sleeve bodysuit (2.5 TOG). Under 18°C: long-sleeve bodysuit and sleepsuit (2.5 TOG).

At this age they hold heat much like you do.

This is the age the app's other pages show by default: every temperature page starts from a baby of 6–12 months.

For sleep, the sack follows the room, as at every age.

No hats or loose blankets for sleep. Check the neck — warm but not sweaty means just right.
